William Taylor was lauded for his professionalism with Omar S. Thornton, who fatally shot eight co-workers in a beer warehouse in Manchester, Conn., then killed himself.

Autopsies concluded that a mother, not her 14-year-old son, was responsible for the five deaths, which were first thought to be a result of an accidental house fire.

The police said they were investigating the deaths of the woman, 37, and her son in the Morris Heights neighborhood as a possible murder-suicide.

Suspicions initially leaned toward the son, C. J. Jones, in the death of a family in Staten Island.

The 34-year-old woman was charged with attempted murder, and her daughter was in serious condition.

Counts of attempted assault and attempted murder were brought against Anthony Pacherille, 16, who the authorities said shot a classmate and then himself.

The 21-year-old jumped over a barrier on the 86th-floor observation deck and fell to the sidewalk about 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
